The tide doesn't come in or go out.Â
All the world's water is pulled, by gravity and spin, moonward on one side and toward the sun on the other. It's difficult for our minds to gather. We'd rather, or we're happier, or just able to, see the tide come in and go out. But it's an astronomical geographical fact beyond dispute.
When King Canute commanded the tide not to rise he was really asking the earth not to spin, not to turn with him toward the bit where the water pulled out. Or went in?Â
The tide doesn't go out. Or come in.
